A Serene Christmas: Decorating with Soft Neutrals

Traditional red and green not your style? Embrace neutrals this Christmas! These soothing tones are perfect if you’re having a pared-down, minimalist holiday this year; they’re also great for modern farmhouse styles or simply creating a serene ambience.

Trim your Christmas tree with birch stars, pine cones, and burlap ribbon. Look for accents in blush, mint, or pale blue—or choose subtle metallics to catch the light. Linen-blend stockings with ribbon details keep the decor looking casual yet still festive. Christmas nativity figurines in pastels lend a whisper of color to the mantel, but you could also go rustic with faux greenery in galvanized pots.

Let light poinsettias be every bit the showstoppers as their red counterparts. Adorn the area above a door with a sparkling ivory poinsettia topper, or crown a side table with a white silk poinsettia arrangement. Still missing some holiday twinkle? Line a table with LED candles in openwork metal lanterns, hang a lighted canvas wall art, or drape a table in a sequin-embellished cloth.

Winter Botanicals Holiday Decorating Lifestyle

A blazing fire in the hearth highlights the surrounding greenery and metallic glimmers. Winter Frost blankets silver and mint green baubles resting among pine cones and snow-flocked faux pine boughs for a refreshing dash of wintry atmosphere. LED candles sitting in the candelabra atop the mantel emit a soft glow. Ivory Shama Candles impart the neutrals of an icy palette while the golden Holiday Shimmer Candles flicker with mesmerizing sparkles.

Encourage the winter forest growing around your fireplace with gleaming tree figurines. Add an element of movement with the Glitter Swirl LED Christmas Tree. When neutral stockings with metallic embellishments hang from the Elegant Gift Stocking Holders, holiday enchantment begins to descend upon your room.

Resting gracefully near the fireplace, the Christmas tree enhances the spellbinding display. Use a skirt that matches the stockings, complete with shimmering ribbons and colors collected from a Winter Garden. Tie into the silver and gold hues on the mantel with the You’ve Gotta Have It Ornaments. Hovering at the tip of the tree, the Anna Winter Angel tops off the decorations with feathery wings and a gown of white and silver.

Want to add a flourish to this otherworldly scene? Consider a bold red reminiscent of cardinals, holly berries, and Santa Claus. Imbue your decor with the rustic charm of the Cardinal Decorative Lighted Water Lantern or brighten the room through the night with the Cardinal LED Nightlight. Captivate your guests further with Love, Joy, Hope, ivory tones, and holly motifs.

Christmas Decorating Trend for 2018: Buffalo Plaid

Whether you’re spending the holidays in a cozy, storybook-like cabin or you simply want to enhance your home with rustic touches, buffalo plaid decor is the answer! Buffalo plaid has a two-tone checkered design that provides visual pop and country flavor. Here are a few areas of the home that will appear oh-so-inviting with a little buffalo plaid in the mix.

The fireplace:
Buffalo plaid stockings will look just darling hanging from the mantel, waiting to be filled with treats from St. Nick. Line the mantel with faux birch LED candles, a mini pine cone tree, and a wilderness sculpture to amp up the lodge aesthetic.

The dining table:
Draped in buffalo plaid linens, your table will beckon everyone to gather ‘round for home-cooked dishes. For a festive accent, select reindeer napkin rings and a faux greenery centerpiece.

The Christmas tree:
A popular holiday song celebrates the loveliness of the Christmas tree’s branches, but you can give some decorating love to the base of the tree too. A buffalo plaid tree skirt looks wonderfully cozy encircling the foot of the tree. Decorate with pine cones, berry garland, and ornaments depicting deer or cardinals. Top the tree with a simple country star or a rustic angel embellished with faux fur.

Benches, chairs, and sofas:
Bare furnishings can seem chilly in the winter, so make them snuggle-ready with buffalo plaid throws and pillows. You can even layer the pillows atop your bed and drape a folded throw across the foot.

Christmas Decorating Trend for 2018: Vintage Farmhouse

If you’re all about comfy and cozy Christmas decor, you’ll love this decorating trend: vintage farmhouse! This holiday decor puts an old-fashioned twist on the beloved farmhouse style. Expect to see retro pickup trucks, weathered details, country table linens, and plaid accessories. These home accents intermingle to create a holiday style rich with nostalgia and charm.

Here are just a few decorating ideas that will lead you to this holiday look. To see all the items we used for this farmhouse dining room, simply click here.

Vintage Farmhouse Christmas Decor

Set a no-fuss tablescape with a braided table runner and placemats in festive colors. Yarn-braided accessories are an inviting alternative to traditional table linens.

Top the table with vintage-style mugs and plates that have a sweet antique appearance. Designs of trucks, wagons, and tractors play up the rural aesthetic.

Get as creative as you like with tabletop centerpieces. Since this holiday style is more relaxed, it naturally lends itself to all kinds of displays: a truck-shaped cookie jar, Mason jars with LED tealights, an old pitcher with faux berries and sprigs, or even a crate with pomegranates and greenery. If you prefer a traditional centerpiece, you can’t go wrong with frosted greenery and red ribbon in a vase.

Warm up wooden benches and chairs with plump cushions, throws, and decorative pillows. Stitched details and fringed edges will help your homespun holiday vision come to life.

Remember to give some farmhouse flavor to the mantel too! Repurpose a plaid table runner as a mantel scarf, and dangle applique Christmas stockings from your favorite decorative hooks.

Holiday Decorating Trend Spotlight: Mountain Christmas

Do you feel like you need a secluded little hideaway to escape to when the holiday season reaches its frenzied peak? Mountain Christmas decor is all about coziness and relaxation—with a few rustic touches added to your home, you’ll be ready to snuggle under your plushest blanket and let those holiday stresses melt away as you sip cocoa in front of a crackling fire (real or virtual).

Take a look at how we brought some mountain-inspired magic to this living room.

  • We adorned the window and wall on either side of the fireplace with lodge-themed tier curtains, a lighted canvas depicting a vintage holiday scene, and a faux wood display ledge.
  • We warmed up the bare floor with a rustic area rug bordered in pine cones and plaid, then placed an accent chair topped with a throw pillow nearby.
  • We placed wilderness Santas on the floor and dangled snowmen Christmas stockings from the mantel. We opted for seasonal decor in earthy, muted tones rather than bright reds or glittery golds.
  • We gave some nature flavor to the area above the fireplace with a pair of decorative 24”H trees covered in pine cones and a pre-lit, frosted faux greenery wreath.
